No 18 PLANET - is a late example of a type 39 F. C. Hibberd & Co. Ltd. ‘Planet’ brand of locomotives, which originated in 1939 based on the German Orenstein & Koppel style.

Works No 3982 is one of a pair of these locos built in 1962 for the Admiralty, using a 3-cylinder Perkins P3 engine and weighing 2¼ tons.

They were used on the Medway island of Hoo Ness for the dispersal of dredged mud etc., although latterly they only saw use on sea wall maintenance until about 1980 when they fell out of use.

Ownership passed through the Department of the Environment to Medway Ports Authority, from whom they were purchased in April 1990.

The loco was immediatly put into service at Yaxham and has received some minor repairs to the engine to date. In time the engine will receive a major overhall, the cab will be restored and completly repainted.
